Aberrant large-scale network interactions across psychiatric disorders revealed by large-sample multi-site rsfMRI datasets

Summary

A research group led by Associate Professor Shinsuke Koike, Professor Kiyoto Kasai, and  Professor Osamu Abe of the University of Tokyo, Assistant Professor Takuya Ishida of Wakayama Medical University, Professor Yasumasa Okamoto of Hiroshima University, Professor Toshiya Murai of Kyoto University, and Director Mitsuo Kawato of ATR has elucidated dynamic aspects of the aberrancy of the causal connections among the large-scale networks of the multiple psychiatric disorders (Schizophrenia, Major Deppressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder) using functional brain images obtained from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI). In this study, dynamic causal modeling (DCM) was applied to the large-sample multi-site dataset, and it revealed that limbic network (LIN) was the core abnormal network common to psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, DCM showed disorder-specific abnormal patterns of causal connections across the 7 networks.

These findings suggested that aberrant dynamics among the large-scale networks could be a key biomarker for these transdiagnostic psychiatric disorders.
