Photo-oxygenation by a biocompatible catalyst reduces amyloid-β levels in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease model mice

Summary

A group of researchers including Yukiko Hori from the University of Tokyo has developed a novel photo-oxygenation method that artificially adds oxygen to aggregated Aβusing a photo-oxygenation catalyst that is activated by light irradiation. The results of this study indicate it's potential as a new therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is also expected to be useful for many neurodegenerative diseases caused by amyloid formation and accumulation other than AD, such as Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
